Mieke Weyn is a Doctoral fellow at MARE – Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre, Regional Agency for the Development of Research Technology and Innovation (ARDITI). Her research is conducted in affiliation with the University of Évora and focuses on the dynamic ecology of insular short-finned pilot whales in Madeira/Macaronesia and the potential effects of climate change on their distribution.

She successfully completed a Bachelor of Science in Biology at the University of Ghent in 2015 and an International Master of Science in Marine Biodiversity and Conservation at The University of Ghent in 2017. After her studies, she participated multiple times as a Marine Mammal Observer in the CETUS-project (CIIMAR) and was a Research Intern at ARDITI in 2018 and the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) in 2019 and 2021. Mieke has attended several scientific conferences and collaborated in several projects which resulted in co-authorship in peer-reviewed publications.

She has a broad interest in marine ecology, movement patterns, habitat use, biogeography, climate change and anthropogenic impacts and has focused her research primarily on cetaceans.
