Rita is currently conducting a PhD on the ecology of cetaceans around Madeira, in association with the University of Madeira. She has a MSc from the University of Lisbon, for which her thesis assessed the impact of whale-watching on cetaceans around Madeira. She also spent several years working as a nature guide -- on land and sea --and as a fisheries observer in cod and tuna fishing fleets.
