Training and Education

MARE-Madeira offers the possibility to host young researchers, benefit from existing collaborations with the six Portuguese Universities associated with MARE and other national or international institutions. These include volunteers and internships during short-term periods (1-3 months) (e.g., regularly from GAME program – GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel), BSc and MSc students carrying their project thesis during 4-9 months, and undergraduate students taking their PhD during 3-4 years. MARE-Madeira researchers will be enrolled and (co)supervise these young researchers and students in their projects (i.e., where are the Principal Investigator), offering the opportunity to share knowledge and cover field/laboratory experiences in marine sciences. MARE-Madeira regularly announces such opportunities (take a look at News and Opportunities as well as our social media), but young researchers should also be proactive and are encouraged to contact us proposing their own ideas and projects. Nevertheless, MARE-Madeira can only accommodate a limited number of young researchers annually to offer good quality programmes.

MARE-Madeira also offers an educational programme to local communities. We believe that education, especially within the young, plays the pivotal role to embrace and save our oceans, and MARE-Madeira works together with the local schools towards ocean literacy and awareness. Regular visits to schools of all educational levels in Madeira Island and occasionally in Porto Santo are made throughout the year. During these visits, the leading information obtained in MARE’s projects is presented in order to show the importance of our seas, and especially to islanders. In addition, MARE-Madeira researchers collaborate in online educational courses on marine sciences for developing countries.
