Kirsten and Joachim Jakobsen
Kirsten and Joachim Jakobsen are administrators of the Rebikoff-Niggeler Foundation. They developed and operate the LULA1000 submersible, which has enabled deep water habitats along the slopes of the Azores and Madeira archipelagoes (down to 1000m) to be mapped and video-documented for both research and documentary projects.
This work has led to the discovery of unknown habitats such as millennia-old cold water coral communities, sponge aggregations and nurseries of rare deep-sea shark species. These observations and data collected have helped us to better understand deep-sea environments and helped political deciders better protect these environments.
Besides scientific collaborations with universities, research institutes and the regional governments, film work from the LULA1000 has been showcased in ground-breaking nature documentaries, including Our Planet, BBC´s Blue Planet II and Planet Earth III, and many others.
Kirsten and Joachim Jakobsen will be presenting 'The Rebikoff Deep-Sea System: Small Logistics, Big Achievements' at the MAD-Deep Symposium.
