Bio
Marko is an Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Exact Sciences and Engineering, University of Madeira (FCEE, UMa) and a Coordinator of Wave Labs (http://wave-labs.org), a laboratory focusing on interactive technologies for ocean preservation. He was an integrated research member of Interactive Technologies Institute at the Laboratory for Robotics and Engineering Systems (ITI/LARSyS) and now he is an integrated research member of MARE-Marine and Environmental Sciences Centre (MARE-Madeira/ARDITI). He holds PhD in Interaction Design and Information Communication Technologies (ICT) from Politecnico di Milano and he currently pursues his second PhD in Astronomy and Astrophysics at the Department of Astronomy, Faculty of Mathematics, University of Belgrade.
His work is on exploration of ubiquitous computing in aquatic settings using IoT, LoRa and HCI. His background is in CS, SE and HCI, studying the usage of open radio telecommunication (LoRa) and Internet of Things (IoT) for interactive purposes (HCI). His research is in line with the UN SDG 14: Life Below Water, aiming for conservation and sustainable usage of oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development. He produces technologies for: (i) understanding and raising awareness of oceanic concerns; (ii) exploration of marine biodiversity; and (iii) sustainable aquatic interactions and interfaces. He is the Principal Investigator of LARGESCALE (allocated EUR 240k), exploring Location-based Augmented Reality Gadgets and Environment-friendly Sightseeing of Cultural Attractions for Locals and Excursionists), a project #32474 funded by FCT and PIDDAC., and of INTERWHALE (allocated EUR 250k), exploring the Advancing Interactive Technology for Responsible Whale-Watching with ref. PTDC/CCI-COM/0450/2020 by FCT. Also, he is the Co-PI of INTERTAGUA (allocated EUR 1.1M), exploring Interfaces Aquáticas Interativas para Deteção e Visualização da Megafauna Marinha Atlântica e Embarcações na Macaronésia usando Marcadores Rádio-transmissores, a grant MAC2/1.1.a /385 provided by MAC-INTERREG. Previously served also as a CEO at Tigerwhale (award winning SME), he was leading multidisciplinary teams of programmers, designers, electrical engineers and business managers. He is also a member of the ACM and IEEE while he has worked for Yahoo! and Whirlpool, designing and developing UX/UI applications reaching millions of users. Marko also serves as a Cross-Cultural Ambassador at UNESCO Club Sorbonne and is a regular member of the AAM (Astronomy Association of Madeira).
