Diadema africanum

Record of mortality of long-spined sea urchins in Madeira…

Recently, considerable mortality rates of long-spined sea urchins (Diadema africanum) have been recorded again in some areas of Madeira archipelago. This information has been reported by scuba divers, free divers and confirmed by scientific monitoring program. To understand the occurrence pattern of this mortality, researchers from MARE (Madeira’s pole) / OOM are collecting information about this phenomenon with citizens’ help. In the following months, we are going to ask for your collaboration regularly. So, if you observe (during recreational dives or other type of activity) dead sea urchins of this species, please contribute to this data collection by filling the survey available at https://wave-labs.org/studies?study=diadema This species is characterized by long, pointed and hollow spines, which break easily. These spines can reach up to 4 times the size of the body. The adults are typically black. Thank you for your cooperation!!

School activities

Our researchers carry out activities in schools in the region and participate in science dissemination events related to the topics that they investigate.
